What Is a Pip in Forex?

A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standard unit of price movement in a forex currency pair — typically 0.0001 (the fourth decimal place). For Japanese Yen pairs, a pip is 0.01 (the second decimal place).

How Pips Work

If the EUR/USD exchange rate moves from 1.1050 to 1.1051, that is a one-pip movement. Pips standardize price movements so traders can communicate and calculate profit or loss consistently across different currency pairs. The monetary value of a pip depends on the lot size of your trade — in a standard lot (100,000 units of currency), one pip is typically worth about $10 for USD-quoted pairs.

Some brokers also quote prices in fractional pips (also called pipettes), adding a fifth decimal place. In this case, a movement from 1.10505 to 1.10506 is one pipette, or one-tenth of a pip. Understanding pip calculation is essential for determining position size and managing risk on every trade.

Why Pips Matter for Your Financial Goals

Pips are the foundation of profit and loss calculation in forex trading. Without understanding pips, you cannot properly size your positions, set stop-losses, or calculate your risk-to-reward ratio. A trade that earns 50 pips on a standard lot generates approximately $500 in profit — but the same 50 pips on a mini lot (10,000 units) generates only about $50.

Conectiv's forex education covers pip calculation and position sizing in depth, ensuring traders understand exactly how much they stand to gain or lose on every trade before entering a position. This knowledge is critical for responsible risk management.

Key Takeaway

A pip is the smallest standard price movement in forex. Understanding pip values is essential for calculating profit, loss, and position size in every trade.

Leverage

Leverage is the use of borrowed capital to control a larger market position than your own funds would allow. For example, 10:1 leverage lets you control $10,000 with just $1,000. It amplifies both gains and losses equally.
