What Is Forex Trading?

Forex (foreign exchange) is the global marketplace for trading national currencies. It is the world's largest and most liquid financial market, with average daily volume exceeding $7.5 trillion. Currencies are traded in pairs, and the market operates 24 hours a day, five days a week.

How Forex Trading Works

In forex, currencies are always traded in pairs — for example, EUR/USD (euro vs. U.S. dollar) or GBP/JPY (British pound vs. Japanese yen). When you buy a currency pair, you are simultaneously buying one currency and selling another. Profit or loss comes from the change in exchange rate between the two.

The forex market operates 24 hours a day across major financial centers — London, New York, Tokyo, and Sydney. This continuous operation, combined with massive daily volume, makes it the most liquid market in the world. Forex trading commonly involves leverage, which allows traders to control large positions with relatively small capital — but also magnifies risk significantly.

Why Forex Matters for Your Financial Goals

Forex trading offers opportunities for active traders due to its liquidity, 24-hour access, and the ability to profit in both rising and falling markets. However, it is also one of the most challenging markets to trade profitably. The combination of leverage and volatility means losses can accumulate quickly without proper education and risk management.

Conectiv's membership includes comprehensive forex education through FX Essentials, FX Strike Live, and Building Concepts sessions — providing structured learning and live market analysis for traders at every level. For beginners, this structured approach is far safer than trying to learn forex through trial and error alone.

Key Takeaway

Forex is the largest financial market in the world, but its leverage and volatility make education essential before trading with real money.

Leverage

Leverage is the use of borrowed capital to control a larger market position than your own funds would allow. For example, 10:1 leverage lets you control $10,000 with just $1,000. It amplifies both gains and losses equally.

Pip

A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standard unit of price movement in a forex currency pair — typically 0.0001 (the fourth decimal place). For Japanese Yen pairs, a pip is 0.01 (the second decimal place).

Technical Analysis

Technical analysis is a method of evaluating securities by analyzing price charts, trading volume, and statistical indicators to identify patterns and predict future movements. Unlike fundamental analysis, it focuses entirely on price action rather than company financials.

Risk Tolerance

Risk tolerance is your ability and willingness to endure declines in your investments. It has two components: financial capacity for risk (objective — based on timeline, income, obligations) and emotional comfort with risk (subjective — how you'd react to a 20% drop).
